Bank Profits

15 billion!! That's how much profit the big banks are estimated to have made this year!!!
Barclays (who I currently bank with) announced their profit at 5.3 billion.
I'm not surprised with all their ridiculous bank charges.
I for one will be attempting to have the extortionate charges that I have had to pay refunded!
HSBC have an estimated profit of 11 billion!!

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

I make sure none of their profit comes from me.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I have banked with Barclays for 23 years....and whilst i acknowledge that it is good that these big commercial institutions make profits (its benefits the country through corporation tax and pensions etc. through institutional shareholders) I do not consider that they really care about ordinary people ie. you and me who have current accounts. 0.1% interest on a current account is frankly criminal! I have just transferred a sum of money from my ING savings account to my Barclays current account and it 'disappears' for 3 days!! Cleared funds from one financial institution to another which make Barclays lots of dosh on the overnight markets at my expense!! Frankly I have had enough of these organisations.

I have just opened a Nationwide FlexAccount (4.75% from April) and Barclays can take a hike!!

or if you bank with co-operative or smile at least some of thier profits go to small charities in the third world.

noone forces you to bank with a particular bank, if you dont like the interest rate etc its easy to move.

the profits are vast and to some will be obscene but most of it is made from investments etc not bank charges.

the best way is to make sure you never pay any charges, i have had my current account 6 years now and in that time i have paid the bank £0.00 by being careful and monitoring the account.

it is vast sums we are talking about thoigh i admit.

and banks def dont care about us, why would they, they just see us as numbers and revenue machines.

A small article in my local paper covering this story stated that the profit was equivilant to £375 for everyone on the country.
I was really quiet chuffed as I have managed to squeeze more than that out of Barclays and other banks in the last year and intend to do the same this year and next .
They keep paying me incentives and I pay no interest to them.Great
  • I never give the banks my money. They pay me.
  • If you bank with Barclays - change your standard account to PLATINUM BANKING. Inludes a free overdraft ( £250 at 0% ) and lower bank charges. You also get an upgraded PLATINUM DEBIT card.

I have too many irons in the fire at this time and plenty of accounts ,there are certain requirements for the upgraded account and I don't need those extras at this time .
    But thanks for the reminder
  • To be fair 90% of Barclays profit came from the investment bank plus they have had to set aside a record £1bn bad debt provision. They also say the are turning away 55% of barclay card applicants and reducing customers credit limit which is about time. I would imagine this is the year when the bank tighten the reins and stop throwing money at people

My gripe with the bank is that they do not have a better interest rate for current account holders. I do not incur bank charges but i would like to be recognised as a responsible account holder by being given a decent level of interest. They rely wholly on customer inertia, people simply can't be bothered to change banks. Well after 23 years I am now bothering to change banks!!! To one which pays 4.95% interest on balances in the current account!

Also it is the way normal people suffer through an intransagence (sp) by the banks to update the archaic system whereby it takes 4/5 days to clear a cheque or to transfer money to other accounts. I recognise that they have to earn money somehow but that should not be the way they do it. Charging me £20 for a bankers draft....WHICH IS MY MONEY!!!!!!!!! is frankly criminal. All the risk is with the customer and very little with the bank!!

Getting off my soap box now..............................
