They usually chat about how things are going and what you are doing to find yourself a job. They may even offer to help you more than they are already or suggest a New Deal programme.

Horace said it all really. Nothing at all to worry about. IIRC you get a very short test to do, questions and answers. Its only a basic literacy and maths test to make sure you can do the basics. (I suck at maths but done ok :D )

I think you're talking about something else, that sounds like your talking about the assesment for a job with DWP, the OP is talking about the 13 week review that jobseeker's get where their jobseeker's agreement is discussed and any changes the adviser wants or the individual requests can be considered.

No, I'm talking about the 13 week appt. Maybe they don't do the test at every JCP?

I work at a jobcentre as an adviser and basically the pupose of this interview is to review you jobseeking agreemnt and have a chat with about what progress you are making and if any further support is needed with your jobsearch ie c.v. spec letters. The basic skills test is usually conducted if you get to the 6 mnth stage. The interview should take no longer than the alloctaed 20mins.
Weekly signing should be approprite but depends of staff levels in your local office, ours for instance doesn't have weekly signing as we are struggling with the fortnightly ones!!!

Are you noticing a significant increase in claimants?

They cannot cope with every fortnight let alone every week.My local one told me they have had a massive increase in new claimants since xmas. They call you to the desk, you sign the card then they say bye ! Not even time to give you any advice or help and the guy at the desk even told me that. There must have been 40-50 people waiting behind me.

I have never had a numeray test at my local jobcentre. I have noticed that they are now open on Saturdays to cope with the demand, my local centre has a huge catchment area so peeps come from miles around to sign on, I have noticed a significant number of flashier cars being parked outside these days so I guess the credit crunch is hitting hard and the clientele are changing.
