How long until banks charge for services?

With all the bank charges being refunded, the banks have probably lost one of their main money earners.
With interest rates at zip, it looks as though they will soon lose another.
A number of mergers means less competition (Halifax / BoS / Lloyds / TSB are all now one, as are Abbey / Santander / A&L)
The banks have a higher default rate, both retail and institutional.
How long do you think it will be before the banks start charging fees, or maintenance charges to run standard current accounts?
Surely they can't sustain all these costs, less profit and pay new members to sign up?
