Hello Mr X, I'm calling from Agency ABC and i have seen your CV on Anyjobboard.com. I wondered what your current situation is as i have a position which may be of interest: It involves digging holes which i see you have experience in...blah blah blah

You then have the option to say; Sorry i am not interested in speaking with agencies (or infact add this to your CV) or continue with the call.

As so many agencies deal persons on an E-Recruitment basis and may not actually see a person face to face due to geographical distance, asking for references/ID to be forwarded and sending the Candidate an email confirmation in regards to their conversation/asking for a return email as permission to represent the candidate would constitute registration.

I imagine the the agency would be asking for names of referee's or written references depending upon which were available?

But it's obvious that they don't approach it like that otherwise I'm sure the OP wouldn't be so peed off with them.

Ive haden't had to look for work for over 5 years now nut in the past, references was required after 1st stage of interviews. ie once they are fairly certain that you are right for the job and just want a backup. Ive never heard of references being used before a interview as this would be a huge job. I dont have a problem giving references as Ive got a excellent job history but what I dont want is these agents calling my past employers so that they have a name to a company and start bugging them.

Like ihatebt said, "we don't use agencies through choice". The old fashioned way of finding a job especially professional ones is a dying breed. Im sure that there is a controlling body for recruitment agents, but not easy controlled.

I welcome genuine calls if they have a potential role that that they tyring to place but what I hate is this 'fishing'

Then he should only deal with respectable Agencies who do approach him in this fashion, and those who have a problem with "Agencies" should rephrase to having a problem with "Unprofessional Agencies".

Nothing like a good ole stereotype to get people building a ducking stool.

Edit: Just to add, a Client will expect a candidate to be referenced before they see the C.V. They don't want to waste time interviewing people who turn out to be unemployable. And yes it was a PITA; but i haven't been involved for about 3 years now.

I think Recruitment agencies are a total waste of space ! I wish employers would get off their backsides and not recruit through these people.
Employment agencies are only in it for themselves and finding employment for out of work people comes a poor second before putting profits in their business.
In my area many of the employment agencies just want to know which jobs I have been applying for and if I have had any interviews but I refuse to give them any leads.

I too am sick of recruitment agencies. I was made redundant in January and have applied for many jobs but all of them except one have been through agencies.

I wonder why agencies put jobs up all the time that don't even exist. There have been the same jobs going up by the same agencies every day since I was made redundant. I'm sure these jobs don't exist, but I don't understand why they keep listing them. Is is something to do with getting a certain amount of job seekers on their books?

I wish firms would just recruit themselves. I find the biggest barrier is getting through the recruitment agencies  even when you have all the skills that they are asking for.

Many recruitment agencies advertise positions that do not exist in order to get more candidates through their doors. Apparently someone replying to a previous post of mine said that this practice is unlawful and agencies can be prosecuted.

I get what everybody seems to be saying. Think im just gonna let them know that I havent been for any interviews if they ask. That should stop them poking.

Is there not some sort of regulatory board to control these agencies. I've no time for anyone that employs any underhand or sneaky tactics

There's conduct regs, though that's more to do with fees and the like. There are also industry bodies (REC, APRC, APSCO) that a lot are signed up to, whether that really makes a difference is your call....
