What's the best way to clean burn marks off a stainless steel hob?

I've got the agents coming to do an inspection and I didn't notice that I'd dropped pasta on the hob and it caught fire - now there's a ****** big mark. The hobs new so I can't use anything abrasive and I've soaked it all night with a damp cloth and it's not moving.
