How to get charcoal out the carpet?

While turning our gas fire on the other night, my husband cunningly decided to put the control-panel guard down on the (new) carpet.
We now have a black charcoal mark on the carpet right in front of the fire place. Any ideas to remove it?
I got him to vacuum it immediately, but he had already 'rubbed it in' by then! :eek:
