The planet is in pretty dire straits, it can not undure consistent abuse from one dominant species that has such control over it, and does such stupid things. Unfortunately at some point in time the species will not be able to control this force, global warming, ocean acidification, etc. If alternatives are not found in time, the chain reaction is likely to cause mass extinction, and starting from scratch. Humanity has been around for a blip in the geological existance of the planet, and is consuming and polluting faster than the environment can adapt to the changes.

Until then we'll have to undure Mr Clown and Hs Darling. So get the beers in and get hammered.

    You're so right. Two choices:

    Get rid of humans, or

    Science will save the day.

Let's hope for the second and, in the meantime, enjoy ourselves responsibly.

Malthus predicted a catastrophe due to population growth outstripping food supply and the Club of Rome predicted a crisis due to depletion of the earth's resources. Whilst not seeking to dismiss these concerns mankind has been remarkably adept at finding ways to increase food production and find new sources of raw materials when old ones have been depleted. The major problem which is hitting us now is the warming effect of greenhouse gases caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels. It is also apparent that reserves of petroleum are not being found in sufficient quantity to replace those being used and that so called 'peak oil' cannot be far away. There are ways to substitute for oil products but it can be expensive. It is hard when these problems are apparent now to do other than concentrate on them and leave the others as 'bridges to be crossed when we reach them'.
  • I think Gordon Brown's pension should be considered in line with his action on emissions. I think he's already lost a chunk with airport expansion and the 2k incentive to scrap your car to support the car industry.

I think I prefer this type of chat than stuff about economics and stuff. I should probably move along to the Arms and get chatting.

    What star sign is everyone?
    How old are you all?

Certainly nothing to do with the economy.

The main issue is that science probably isn't going to be clever enough to deal with it once it gets past a certain critical point. The problem is that virtually everyone knows about polar ice cap melting caused by global warming but few understand the bigger picture.

Rapid Carbon dioxide production contributes to other pretty bad sh8t, acidification of the oceans for example, which can kill off life in the ocean, given the plakton in the ocean is sensitive to excess acid and they produce 1/2 the worlds oxygen, that's pretty bad. Oceans currents need to cooling effect of the poles to keep circulating. Tons of methane gas is stored currently in areas that are ice bound but are melting.

Evolution is a process that takes millions of years the problem is humans are changing the environment by millions of years in just a couple of hundred years, since the industrial revolution. As a species I doubt that in a million years time humans will be the dominant species on earth, given the current rate of change.

Honestly. It worries me that people read this in the 21st Century.

I have a friend who works for a well known, national publication that many on here will read. Due to cut backs this publication struck a deal with their well known Astologer to not write their horoscope column anymore but instead pay them a smaller fee to keep their face and branding on the stars column. My mate, who is a journo and very cynical of horoscopes was asked to step in and now writes the stars each week, normally on a 10 minute coffee break. Absolutely loves it too. Hope no one is taking it too seriously though.

WITH PSYCHIC BOBPisces (20 FEB-20 MAR)
A full Moon next to Saturn signals a climactic point for one pet project. But remember, in the eyes of the law, as an animal can't speak, it can't give its consent.
    Aries (21 MAR-19 APR)
    Are those parsnips?
    Taurus (April 20-May 20)
This week’s full Moon highlights your poor teeth and the terrible smell of dog ordure that constantly surrounds you, but decides to do nothing about them.

    Gemini (21 MAY-20 JUN)
If the weight of your chosen career is hanging heavy, don't worry. It will soon be over.

    Cancer (21 JUN-22 JUL)
Look at your relationships as objectively as you can. You thought you could make her love you, but now she has set fire to herself it's time to move on.

    Leo (23 JUL-22 AUG)
Believe in yourself and others will too. Actually that's just rubbish.

    Virgo (23 AUG-22 SEP)
Mars and Neptune are having a naked wrestling match on your rug, but there is nothing homosexual about it, not even their erections, which happen all the time in professional wrestling. You can look it up if you want.

    Libra (23 SEP-23 OCT)
Someone may criticise the way you do things, or hold judgement over how you run your life. Her name is Harriet Harman, and you should find out where she lives.

    Scorpio (24 OCT-21 NOV)
Although your career, children and your husband are important to you, they are not as important as white wine.

    Sagittarius (22 NOV-21 DEC)
Time to reassess your savings and investments, business unions, friendships and emotional partnerships, if you have any.

    Capricorn (22 DEC-19 JAN)
Oooh, that's a nasty looking burn.

    Aquarius (20 JAN-19 FEB)

Mercury and Saturn fit warped discs to your car brakes making the steering vibrate like something from the Ann Summer’s catalogue. What a pair of !!!!ing jokers.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

Are we going to be here at all, given the damage we're doing?

Surely there is enough scientific knowledge available to convince world leaders to take better action then?

Why do they always talk but not act (extending airports etc)?

It's all about short term benefits, but we entrust the earth's future to these lemmings.
