I'm not a student ...

Options
I'm with the Halifax Bank of Scotland and I have my Regular Savings, Web-Saver, Instant Access Savings and oddly, Student Current Account with them.

I'm positive I've brought this up with them before in branch and also by letter, see if anyone here can make heads or tails of what I'm trying to get across ... "I'm not a student anymore!" ... It's fairly clear, isn't it? No smoke or mirrors. Just the clear-cut fact I've not been in University since January 2008, classed as having graduated in June 2007.

I don't think there's anything detrimental to my having a student account, I probably get a better rate of interest (barely) and I have the option of an interest-free overdraft - in all honesty I'm not too concerned, I've tried telling them and they've not listened but I do wonder ...

If I were to apply for my interest-free overdraft and receive the full amount (£3,000) would there be any benefit in placing it into a savings account or is it simply a waste of time given that I have no idea how much longer I'm going to have the account for? (and if they suddenly decide to change their mind I'll get stuffed with big nasty interest rates!)

Also - seeings as I'm not a student, would such an act be deemed fraudulent? I wouldn't mind if they just went ahead and gave me a graduate account (there's no benefits I would require from one, no loans to pay off, no debt, etc.) but if they're keeping me on a Student Account when it's clearly not the appropriate product, surely bully for them not doing their sales pitches more often. :)

Any information is appreciated!

  • TBH if you have told them why dont you call them and ask what the implications of keeping the account active are?
If they state no implications then i would consider chucking the 3k into a savings account if you can trust yourself not to spend it - you may as well gain the interest from it!

I doubt you'll get the £3k. Its upto £3k. ;) You will more than likely get £500-£1000 at first.
