Employee reference req. Don't know him?

This is a strange one. I have just received a letter from a recruitment services company asking for a reference from someone who says they are an old employee of my company.
I've never heard of them and they live miles away from where I am. I don't employ anyone, but now and again get contractors for some jobs, I can't remember this guy at all though.
There is something a little strange about my address they have used as well.
I intend ringing the company, but wanted any thoughts first?

Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

Could be someone trying it on. Best action is to be honest and say you don't know this person and leave it at that.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

Be really careful, and make sure you actually dont know him. While it could be someone trying it on, if you make a mistake, you'll have cost them their job. Are the dates feasable?Signature down for maintenance :rotfl:0

Does it say WHEN they claim to have worked for you?
Very rude (IMO) of someone to give your name without asking you first!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I wouldn't dream of putting someone's name forward as a referee without asking them!0
