Fancy icing

Options
Hiya,

I am on a roll today - second new thread!

I am looking to produce some cupcakes for an open house event for a local charity. I want to decorate the cupcakes with white icing and then add the charity logo on top.

I have previously used icing pens in red and green to colour in a snowman one Christmas, but am no expert.

I thought I would create some sort of stencil to use, but any tips from experts on here on such ideas?

Also, can anyone recommend anywhere to buy icing pens in the East Sussex area?

I picked the others up in Richmond when I was visiting friends, but am unlikely to anywhere near there soon and there aren't the great foodie places here in Sussex that I know of(?)

Thanks!

  • How complicated is the logo? I know you can get things printed on to edible paper if it's quite a complex logo, then cut it out into squares and stick on top of buttercream icing. (Places on ebay do this, or maybe somewhere like asda that do those photo cakes may do it?)

The icing pens I only find useful on very smooth icing, like fondant icing. I tried to use it on buttercream once and the results were average.

    Pretty complicated.

    The logo is as follows:

Obviously I don't want the text underneath included, but I had thought about getting the picture converted into edible icing, I will have to get some costs and also, am unsure what the turnaround will be as time is pressing on.

I remember my icing skills with the pens last time were a bit wiggly! Not so bad when you are only impressing a group of under-fives, bit different when its senior stakeholders you are feeding!!!

  • If you are using fondant icing just cut out the logo and put on top of some coloured fondant icing trace round with a knife and stick it on with a little water
Icing pens can be bought in Asda or Sainsbury they do quite a good range
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Not sure where in the South east you are but Google turned up this place in East Grinstead

Failing that, can you ring round the caterers/cake decorating shops and ask to buy one?

i would roll out some sugarpaste (ready roll icing) cut round discs and place on a sheet of grease proof or surface dusted in icing sugar and allow to dry ant the draw or paint on with a fine paint brush and food colourings if you have a steady hand.
the on the day just fix with a blob of icing to the top of the cakes

Thanks everyone, Eastbourne is only 14 miles away so doable - maybe Saturday might be a good bet.

shegha - Great idea which I might try in the meantime, thanks!

I might have a go at making an acetate stencil to paint on the design onto icing discs as you have suggested.

Trouble is, I know if I go into a lovely fancy cookshop that does sugar craft, etc, I will end up spending a fortune!

I used this seller on Ebay for a cake topper for my dd2 birthday. She added her name to the topper and it really was easy to use. Maybe she would print your design in the same way.
Not sure how many you need to make but £1.95 for 24 it might be cheaper and less hassle to buy these by the time you have bought pens. The cakes really do look fab when they are done. They were sent quickly too. I like cake decorating but I think piping/drawing a logo onto loads of cupcakes might send me a little stir crazy
Good luck and please let us see the finished result!

They look great - and would be so easy to fix on with a wee dab of water icing. :T
