in Cutting tax
Hi folks
Can any one help? I have been receiving council tax benefit as hubby and I are on very small income i.e. no NI or tax. However, I have received an inheritance which now puts us above "the savings" limit. I have informed the Council and they now seem to be suggesting that I am in arrears! The inheritance is reasonable small (although not small enough for these purposes). I am not against paying Council Tax but do resent spending my inheritance this way as I thought it would be a buffer towards unforeseen expenses in the future. Does anyone know anything about this sort of situation and the best way forward with the Council?
Thanx

Sorry but all i can say is if your not entitled to council tax benefit then you have to pay it the same as the rest of us who are not entitleld to it have to pay it. Maybe not what you wanted to hear but its the only answer i have.
I manage (with a struggle) to work full time even though i have osteoporosis, pernicious aneamia and multiple joint arthritis, my husband is very limted in the sight department. We have to pay full CT and receive no benefits at all.
Luckily we have no mortgage now but hey ho, thats life
Regards
Annei

Hi Annei
Thanks for your reply - I am so sorry for your predicament. I am not trying to evade paying Council Tax now but just resent, having recently lost my mother needing to use this money to pay "arrears" which I don't understand. As of last year,we really needed the benefit. I have declared the inheritance but I guess this will pay a few years ct and then we will be back in the system!0 -
Your Council Tax Benefit would have been paid to the end of the year on the basis of your claim, if you cease being eligible then your claim ends and any benefit paid from that date to the end of the year has been overpaid and is recoverable as you are no longer entitled to it.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Thanks CIS - that was what I was thinking and as I didn't get the money until a month or so ago presumably they won't ask for all last years back.
I will give them a ring now that I have a better idea of the system.
Thanks again0
