Removing a tree stump?

Anyone got any idea how to get rid of tree stumps?

Someone suggested hiring a machine to dig them out, but not sure what that is! I have loads of them scattered around my garden, and really would like to use this space for some more managable dwarf fruit trees!

  • Only way i really know if is to hire a mini digger and dig them out, big job though depending on trunk stump size, and a sharp saw to cut the remaining roots off.
  • You can hire a machine called a stump grinder to break it up

I'm in the process of burning mine out although I only have one to do. Just dig around the stump as deep as you can and then chuck in any wood, trimmings, cardboard etc and set light to it. I've got rid of a load of rubbish in the process.

As for burning it out, I tried this with one, I had 4 large fires over and around it but that didnt seem to do a thing! Plus the others are either close to the house or neighbours fence!

We have successfully removed tree stumps by the following method.

Buy some brush wood killer, score deep cuts into the top of the stump and pour the SBK crystals into the cuts and them put a poly bag over the top and tie down, gradually the stump will rot away sufficiently for you to rock it our of the ground.

We had a tree growing up from the crack in the slabs right up the front of the house, it took 12 months but we did get it out and have used the same method on several other stumps left in the garden.

I have looked at this option, but my OH is a childminder, and chemical use is a bit of a no go area.

And to top it all off I need to lay a patio sometime in the next few months where the main tree is! So time is slightly important. I think it's gonna have to be one of those grinder things.

Does anyone know if that one at the Hire shop has limitations?
