Consumption trends and its relavance to the retail sector

please see the good graphs on the link for 'death of consumption' episode on the link.

http://www.worldenergysource.com/wetv/realitycheck/index.cfm

the website does not allow me to give a direct link to the video. so click on 'Reality check: Death of consumption' video on the link given above. looks like their videos stay on for a week then get replaced by newer stuff. although am not sure how frequently they delete the old stuff.

i am not sure if that video will get deleted on monday. so i hope fc123 gets to see the above mentioned video before it gets taken down from the website.

this article might interest you as well - STAIRWAY TO RETAIL HEAVEN. although it doesnt have all the graphs present on the video mentioned on the prev link. its mainly about the usa retail sector but guess it will have repurcussions here as well.

liked the neat corelation between MEWing and GDP increase(graph on the video). the graphs almost were overlapping each other to the T. same for the consumtion increase and the GDP rise even if the production was falling. cleary it wasnt sustainable with poor savings and it being debt driven. and worst part is that inspite of all this evidence which surely the govt must be having they still seem to think that debt increase is the best option as a rescue package. i find this baffling.

I have added it to faves to watch tomo.......hope it's still there.

I am currently on a stairway to retail heaven...all on my lonesome.

It's all about being off the mainstream now as there is mainstream everywhere.

This week has been a manic one...another range to make (and I so love it too *pats self on back* :D ) that I finished today..... plus have been dressing Barbies in Real life too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rHXeWxN3cw&feature=channel

The whole point of niche is that it's not for everyone....many think my work is hideous but a few love it....so no jibes about Startrek perleeze...it's an 80's Trash, Boootyliscious Vibe ;) and that's the point I guess.

The fun just never stops ;)

As I haven't got the energy to watch a vid at the moment, I thought I would update you all on rival forums via the consumption (or not) thread...Bubbles won't mind.

Sometimes, after a drink, I google myself....start again...that sounds wrong. I put my label into google and read with dread. Will the fashion police website slate me? etc etc.

I find my label being talked about on forums like handbag.com or montages of pics of my stuff on genuine blogs (not ad ones) with comments from their mates. It's all a bit odd.
handbag.com has a whole forum just on shopping. I was at a loss on what to post too....perhaps we should all go hang out on there instead?

are you dressing those barbies in the video. must be into the big bucks game now then.

i know mass market garments dont have much margin as i have relatives who have been decades in the business, some in retail made to order tailoring, some running garment factories, some on the cotton whole sale side as well. good you made the move to niche products as mass market tailoring is hard work, lower margins and anytime your clients can move to a cheaper producer. so better to be niche, less work more margins in the long run once established.

ps: have someone in the extended family circle one person manufacturing handbags as well. wierd coincidence

With stuff like this it's about timing....this one is a bit out.

One of the frocks isn't mine but other 4 are.

I don't ever make £££ from actually dressing celebs (and I have dressed a lot over the years) unless they purchase a garment in the same way a customer does. A well known one buys a lot of units from us for her reality show off and on.

The trick is to make sure you can selll some of the same stuff, at the same time and customers can find it....that's the hard bit....esp if you are not branded as such (eg; Der and Ger ...D + G....slapped across the front) but the internet is changing all this.

Many years back we used to dress the girls on Big Breakfast and the stylist said loads of people would contact the show to find out where they could buy what Denise V O was wearing or whatever...and they would be given our shop 'phone no. But a bit useless to someone in Manchester if we were only based in London and Brighton.

I have half got this one sussed though, but it is an older range and most has already sold out but we have repeat going through at the moment, so, we will be ready to convert interest into sales as soon as poss. I am going to have to hang out on handbag.com more.;)

Forgot to add...it's the wonderful UK High St Chains that really make the money...they rip off anything that they fancy and there isn't a lot one can do about it.
I was at a trade fair last month looking at copies of work I sold last October but this time I wasn't mad about it as I had already caned 2000 units...all for me.....it didn't use to be like this...we just used to lose out.

The very nice Chinese factory owner (who was selling copies of my work) was telling me how 'bestseller' they are. I was there with a 'buyer' badge.

It's the next thing we have to sort out...but difficult to do.

I thought the dresses were great too bubbles & FC. I would probably wear one if I was 20 years younger and a couple of sizes smaller!

I like the style, they make a statement and show off the figure without horrible shapes and patterns (I hate Pucci with a passion).
