    I also live on a croft, in a caravan though - have to pay council tax of nearly £800 - doesn't seem fair.
    We are building our own house - slowly & will have a micro hydro system as there is a waterfall - we will also have some mains electric - we have it in the caravan, but only for lights & computer. It's hydro power here.
    Have a wood stove & loads of dead wood lying about, so heatings free & do some cooking on the stove too.
    Hope we get a good summer for building as I don't want another winter in the caravan.
