Coffee Makers - Permanent Filter

Has anyone got a coffee maker with a permanent filter? I loved my old machine which took disposable filters...it stopped heating water last week (not bad as it was ten years old) but it was also HUGE, so I'm thinking of replacing it with a neat little Delonghi 10 cup, but it has a permanent filter 
Does this matter? I mean, it must be cheaper than buying paper filters (doh!) but does the coffee taste as good I wonder?
