Chilli with oats..

Options
Hi all

I am going to make chilli con carne soon and going to add porridge oats this time to bulk it out as many tipsters on here have suggested! Just wondering do I have to cook the oats separatley first or just add straight out the bag?

Thanks

You can use them straight from the bag;)

Personally I'd add bulk with more veg -chopped peppers, sweetcorn, mushrooms, carrots or with lentils rather than oats.

I always add a tin of baked beans too, if that helps.

I agree with thriftlady, I would rather pad it out with extra veg, beans and lentils as oats can really swell and use a lot of liquid and you can end up with a sort of solid chilli flavoured porridge. If you do want to add oats it's best to add just a few at a time.

Yes I like baked beans in my chilli too. We've just had chilli actually. I managed to double the pound of mince I had by adding kidney beans, half a tin of baked beans and a couple of handfuls of sweetcorn. We still managed to eat it all though:o
