Being Charged Extra for Council Tax

Got a letter throught telling me that i am to be charged an extra £200 from last year.... This is for another adult in my house which is my son and this is the first time that i have been told to pay more. He has turned 21 and can only see the reason why after so long my council tax has gone up and will be paying extra again in the next month. As he is not working and claiming incapasty benift i did't think that they would charge me more.

Is this just he done thing or can i appeal it and state that my son does not work and has very little money coming in ?

Unless your son was a full time student, he would have been counted as 2nd adult from age 18. Whether you would be eligible for any CT benefit would usually depend on total household income, not just your son's. But you might be entitled to second adult rebate, check with your council
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

You have no appeal against the rate of Council Tax charged , your son should have been regarded on your bill from age 18 unless he was a F/T student. It seems that either they have just found out that the discount should now cease or was applied incorrectly and they have decided not to backdate.

You need to claim Council Tax Benefit for help in paying your bill, Council Tax itself does not take in to account income, employment status etc.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Your son couldn't claim CTB, you would need to claim as the Council Tax liability is in your name.
