Don't mean to be a dummy - but what is gmail and why are so many people after it?

Tried to follow links to find out and even put into MSE search engine - but couldn't bring up the post?

Google are starting a new webbased e-mail service which 1Gb of storage. Excellent interface - example screens on the website above.
You can only get an account with an invite at the moment, it hasn't been generally released yet.

Would anyone be kind enough to invite me - I use google 20-50 times a day - its fantastic, but i obviously missed something 'cause I didn't even know about this!
