Very silly Ironing Question

Okay I caved in yesterday and went to Aldi and got one of the Steam Generator Irons. (only because mum gave me £30 for chauffering them around for the last few weeks).

Now the silly question is can I use it with a normal ironing board. They did still have a few of the ironing boards in there but I had the kids in the car and couldn't fit one in too as they were huge. I only have a solid non-mesh ironing board but I really want to use my new iron today to do the uniforms.

Might be worth trying your new iron on your old ironing board, i cant see a problem with the old board, does it say anywhere on your new iron that it needs a specific type of board to iron on?

Normally they don't need to have a specific board but I've found that boards with a mesh top tend to give better results as the steam can pass straight through the fabric.
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A
  • Mine works okay on an ordinary board but my friend has the mesh board and it is much better.

I'm the same, I got a Challenge steam generator out of Argos at Christmas and it works fine on my standard ironing board. I don't doubt that it would work better with a mesh top ironing board but I'm happy enough with the results I'm getting with the standard board.

    Another silly question please.
I've just bought the steam generator one from Aldi. I also bought some of the scented water stuff that says to use instead of water.
Having just read the instructions, it does say not to use scented products.
Can I use this stuff in this iron or should I just take it back??
    Thanks

Personally, I wouldn't use scented water etc in my steam generator, just in case it causes stains or causes the soleplate to get clogged up. I just use tap water, not distilled or anything. I wouldn't use it but I'm sure there are people out there that do, I just wouldn't want to chance it.

WEll if it specifically says NOT to use it, I wouldn't!
It probably leaves a film deposit that would accumulate quickly as it generates a lot of steam...

Bootman if you've already bought the stuff what you could do is put it into a spray bottle and spritz the fabric with it instead of putting it in the generator.

  • I have a steam generator and have used both board types with it. Both work BUT...... It takes a little longer with a solid board (but still quicker than a normal iron) and your ironing will need more airing as the steam cannot blast through the fabric.
Please do not put anything other than instructed into your new iron, there is a lot more than you think in the generator part and some sensitive valves and safety features are built in are there too. Once you crank it up full you will astounded how much steam is produced and its pressure too.
The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...
