 Last night in bed I started thinking about earning extra money and decided that I am going to approach local small businesses and offer PR support (this is what I do for a living). I can write their press releases, proof read etc and even got a good idea for an advert in the local freebie paper that everyone in this town seems to read.

I am going to go for it and see what happens, will be good experience as well to do freelance stuff.

I've also had a second idea. My friend works at a local Uni and I thought about getting them to put up little notices offering students to type up their essays for a small fee.

May come to nothing but worth a try...have no idea what to charge though (any suggestions?). I don't have to declare what I earn extra do I? I'm not expecting it to be a lot.

If you do this for a living, does this mean you're employed - will there be any conflict between working for yourself and your employers' requirements? If there is it may be specified in your contract of employment.

This is such a good idea! Does anyone know what the going rate for this sort of thing is? Thanks :)
  • Not sure if this is any help but I've seen transcription companies (eg https://www.dict8.co.uk) offer 8p per line......could be a good basis?

    Lol Daddyo

I just checked some websites and one of them was quoting 1p per word for proof reading and 1.5p per word for editing. So a dissertation of around 10,000 words should bring in at least £100.

My friend charges £4 per thousand words. That doesn't sound like very much, until you realise that at font size 12 that's about £4 per 2 pages.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

and how many students do you know who have £100 spare?

Those prices sound like the proof reading companies that work for publishing houses & other business ventures.

Certainly where I went to uni (Bristol) you'd be surprised! Most of the overseas students were pretty well off. The overseas fees are so high that they have to be just to be there! And if it's for a one off final thesis or something i reckon many of them would pay it.
