Eye Tests

Don't know if this applies to all opticians but I recently visited Specsavers for an eye test and one of the questions they asked was has any member of my close family suffered from Glucoma. My father had and when I told them this they said they eye test would be free. They did not ask for any evidence of this just asked me to sign a disclaimer.
If anyone in your family does have Glucoma it will be worth remembering that Specsavers will give you a free eye test if you tell them.

Thanks for that. My dad has Glucoma & I am in need of an eye test! I like the sound of that word - free!

All relatives of glaucoma sufferers over 40 can receive free annual eye tests in any optician because it is paid for by the NHS, not just in Specsavers. It surprises me that they dont ask for evidence that you qualify, otherwise anyone could claim they are entitled.
Visual field is lost in glaucoma and can never be recovered though it can be treated so it doesnt get worse once it is detected. I have 2 parents and a sister with this condition so it is very important for me. My parents had 2 different types of glaucoma and I am very concerned I have a high risk for developing it: I never miss my annual check.
But then neither did my mother and she suddenly developed a loss of visual field, even though she had normal pressure levels in her eyes. This is when we found out there exists a 'normal pressure glaucoma' as well as the better known type with raised pressure in the eyes.
So everyone get your eyes tested at least once a year: its not just for checking if you need glasses. (I was even advised to get it checked every 6 months to catch any deterioration as early as possible becaiuse of my particular risk.)
