Shocked by the advice my mum got at the CAB...

Personally I want to look more into why the CAB suggested this... (And perhaps why legal aid?). She put a lot of faith into the CAB and today is very low because she feels no closer to starting to sort this. Its a busy couple of days til she leaves but I will definately point her towards the info suggested here, and have also suggested she register here.0

Tell your mum not to feel down as my inference is that on paper she is well worth the debt ( only my impression obviously). She also seems to want to pay the debt. She therefore needs the creditors to get off her back and leave her to sort out realising her assets - this can best be acheived by contacting her creditors perhaps directly or contacting another debt line.0

Most CAB bureaus that I know have at least one worker on a LSC (Legal Services Commission) contract. They can see people where there is a legal issue and the client is either on certain benefits or has a very low income. There are fixed figures for outgoings and what is left must be less than around £700 per month. So I would guess your mum qualified.
The adviser should have dealt with options and consequences. Walking away is an option, as is a dmp, as are probably several others. The advice should be confirmed in writing in the form of a customer care letter - if that doesn't come through automatically, get your mum to request it.0 -

She was surprised not to be shown a write up there, but did say something would be coming in the post. Will be intersting to see what it says. She says she didn't look closely at her in/ outgoings or assets, and certainly did not deal with options or consequences- it was my mum who was trying to talk about the consequences of following her advice.0
