LP storage how do you store yours?

Options
I have boxes of LPs in the garage and I'm going to get them out, dust them down and start listening to them! (very OS!)

One thing though, I wondered if anyone can come up with a great way of storing them? I have looked at Ikea, argos, dunelme and the shelving seems pricey for what it is. I would be extremely lucky to drop on anything that would fit the bill off freecycle or in a charity shop so I thought I'd post to ask you clever guys for help!
Thank you in advance :)

  • Thanks Floss, I saw these on the ikea website, would all the shelves stand the weight or is it just the bottom one?

Do you want to keep them because they are vinyl, or because of the music they contain?

I ask this as we bought a USB turntable which plugs into the PC to convert the vinyl into MP3 and thereby being able to dispose of the vinyl ... not that after 2yrs of owning the device have I actually gotten around to actually doing more than about 6 albums, but the theory is good ... in the meantime .. a plastic crate works well ;)

Mine are in a pile on one of those wheeled plant stands. They can then be moved for dusting!

Another vote for the bottom shelf of an Ikea Billy bookcase. Have convinced OH that one shelf of records he never plays is quite enough. The rest are still boxed from when we moved two years ago!!

i think the ikea shelving unit expedit is the perfect size for LP's... and they were on offer last time we went to ikea not that long ago. we use an old shelf at the minute and they're on the bottom shelf of that at the minute but im thinking of getting an expedit

  • Mine are in a big wooden chest in the living room that doubles as a coffee table
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • Don't keep them on a bookshelf as the spines will fade (if you're keeping them for posterity). A cupboard of a big wooden chest like Butterfly Brain suggested would be ideal. Store them vertically (stood up like books) not stacked like pancakes as stacking will cause damage to the ones on the bottom. If you're being truly obsessive like my OH then either put each record in a plastic sleeve (not very cheap) or for a frugal version stick a piece of plain paper between each cover as older record sleeves tend to get stuck together and then you'll rip the covers when you separate them.

We use those sturdy cardboard boxes with proper lids that are meant for filing when storing LPs temporarily. That might help while you look for a more permanent but frugal home for them. HTH.
