I wanna buy a cake tin or make my own novelty cake

My son's 1st birthday is around the corner, and i've always dreamed of making the cake myself.
the actual cake isn't a problem, it's the shape.
i wouldnt mind buying a cake tin - but cant think of which one to chose. Also want to pay a decent price (decent = cheap).
or i dont mind baking a cake and then rearranging it to make a novelty cake from scratch.
any ideas, tips, pics, websites etc.
pls
thanks

shame you don't live near me. i have a teddy bear cake tin that I used for both my boys 1st birthdays. It is just sat in a cupboard now.
Wilton cake tins come in all shapes and sizes. There is a cake shop near us that does hire them out.0 -
I have an elmo tin and tinkerbell if you want to buy that! Seriously I always buy wilton tins like the pp said. I had the teddy one too (sold). Check out ebay for sellers of wilton tins. Local cake or cookery shops sell or hire them.
I always sell my tins on after. You can look at the wilton site for ideas of a tin you want and then search for it cheaper. http://www.wilton.com/shapedpans/browse.cfm
They also have ideas for other cakes on there without using their tins.
But a number one is easy to make without a tin. Just bake a rectangle slab cake and cut out a number one. (Draw the one on greaseproof paper first and layout on the cake, you can print out one from the computer if needs be)0 -
If you can, go along to your local library and see what cake decorating book sthey've got. There are loads with titles like easy cakes, easy kid's cakes etc etc, and most can be done without the need to buy expensive tins. Or, have a look in somewhere like 'The Works' or one of the other cheap bookshops, they've usually got cake decorating books and again, they're cheap.0

I got a great book from my local library when I first started all could be done at home and no specialst tins needed, it had loads of ideas. I also found hobbycraft had loads of stuff and ideas and my local cake shop. You could try a local bakers see if they could hire out a mould.december 2008 wins : 2 clothes show tickets, hamper of kids xmas books, peroni bowl :j
