Self Assessment Penalty Appeal

Hi there,

I filed my self assessment for year ending April 2008 on Jan 14th online.

This morning I received a letter saying I haven't filed it and owe a £100 penalty!

I have filled in the appeal form and will be sending it first thing tomorrow (making a photocopy for myself and sending special delivery).

The letter is dated 17th Feb and says I have 30 days to pay even though I only received it this morning nearly 3 weeks later!!

This is the first time this has happened to me and wondered if it happened to anyone else and if so how likely is it the appeal will be succesful? I really don't have any spare money- let alone £100. I filed early and have the html confirmation including the submission receipt reference.

Thank you for any replies

Kaz

  • If there were any queries about your tax return, and they weren't answered by 31 January, they may be treating it as a late return - you'd need to check this.

Or it could just be a glitch - I had to do appeals for 2 companies I deal with last year for being late with PAYE returns - in one case. they didn't need to put one in as it was a new company and hadn't paid any wages yet, and in the other the return had been sent in recorded delivery and simply went missing... in both those cases, the reminders didn't come out for 4 months, £400 fines demanded. Was this a stealth tax?

    Hello Kez

You are not the only one, there is another thread about this, stick a search in for it, I will try and find it and doa link for you.
  • I must admit I don't know what a stealth tax is :S

Thank you for the replies- I hope it is just a glitch. I was a sole trader for 3 years selling hand crafted goods online and ashamed to say made a small loss or just broke even each year, so haven't anything to pay.

I haven't received anything at all to say there were any problems/queries with my returns

Thank you for the link will read through now :)

Hope this help you sleep easier! Amazing how HMRC manage to intimidate all of us - even from a distance.

Tell me about it!! I've been very worried as I know 100 quid isn't much for some people but I don't have a spare 100 pennies at the mo haha

Had a read through and think I'll be ok- I honestly can't see that I've made a mistake anywhere, so fingers crossed :D
