time govt stepped in

Will try to keep this short and simple.
many of us have simple bank accounts mainly debit cards
we dont get overdrafts etc
can the banks stop paying direct debits if we dont have the money in our accounts and stop charging us
last month i paid my phone bill over the phone went online and cancelled direct debit for this
2 weeks later checking my account i notice allience leicester paid this again made me over drawn charged me £35 and £5 each day over drawn.
as i only get £120 every 2 weeks benifet my bank will grab it all with charges
phoned to complian was told they will pass to claims dept 2 weeks later no word

TIME THE GOVT STEPT IN AND HELPED ALL ON LOW INCOME NOW

ALL SIMPLE BANK ACCOUNT SHOULD HELP THE PEOPLE WHO NEED THE HELP MORE
IF YOU DONT HAVE THE MONEY IN ACCOUNT DIRECT DEBIT/STANDING ORDER IS NOT PAID.
YOU GET AN ONE OFF CHARGE OF £5 (IF THE £5 CHARGE MAKES YOU OVER DRAWN NO FURTHER CHARGE)

any ideas or am i just mad as a brush

If you cancelled the direct debit then you are entitled to a refund under the direct debit guarantee. Quote it back at them. However, I always find it's much better to cancel direct debits in writing, then you have some proof.

You should have asked whether it was too late to stop the DD going through; I believe they start the process some while beforehand, that month's was probably already in the system by the time you cancelled it.
