Dear all
One of my friends has two jobs. The first one she got, she has a tax code for. She then got another job and has a BR tax code for that. The first employer then cut her hours, so the second job is now more hours than the first.
My question is: Will the excess tax she has paid (on BR) on the second job be automatically refunded, and the codes swapped for the next financial year.... OR.... does she need to ask for a tax return?
Her son is also in a bit of a pickle - having had several short term agency jobs over the last year. He's been paying tax on his earnings as if he earned that monthly amount for the whole year, but I'd be surprised if he earned as much as the 'allowance' in total.
Same question then, will some or all of it be automatically refunded or does he need a tax return?

No tax return is required in either case. First thing she should do is contact her main tax office (the one that deals with her first employer) and give them an estimate of her earnings at both jobs. They will then be able to change the tax codes and split her tax free allowance accordingly.
If, for any reason, the new codes are not used before 05/04/2009, she should then wait until she receives her P60's for 2008-09. She can then telepone her tax office, confirm the details for that year and they will then be able to issue any refund.0
