Not much to add, except echo Seakay advice on check supermarket reduced / yellow label items

My local ASDA customer base is a mix of Waitrose & Smartprice customers & so organic is often left unsold and thus reduced.

With veg it is often because the "display until date" has been reached, but as all MSOS know for veg like onions, carrots or bananas this is is the time to buy them

Thus today I scooped up organic bacon, carrots, broccolli [sp?] and bananas all reduced

    Thanks for all your replies.

Greenbee - I think for us it will mean we use the supermarket more. :o
I was using local stores and the local farm shop, but they don't sell organic, so I will have to start using one of the supermarkets. The farm shop isn't as great as it sounds, as none of the veg come from the farm and I have just found out that the free range eggs aren't, they are battery eggs (long story).

I buy my eggs now from a woman a few doors down the lane where I live and I can see the chickens from my bedroom window. They are as free range as they come, but probably not 100% organic, but in my view are far better tasting.

Lindadykes - I agree regarding the breadmaking as the supermarkets organic bread seems limited. I have been baking my own bread, but I think I need to up the amount! I would love the recipe for the no knead bread, if you could post it please??

I also agree with the posts about using the reduced section of supermarkets. My local Co-op has loads of organic produce reduced and I walk up each morning after I have dropped my DD's off at school to see what treasures I can find. I have been doing this for a few weeks and have quite a collection in my freezer. :j

The only thing is I really need to get an additional freezer as I have a fridge freezer at present and its just not big enough. As well as reduced meat, I have stacks of organic stewed apples in there as my auntie had too many to deal with! (about 15lbs!). I also have 2 big bags of apples in my DD's playhouse outside as I have nowhere else to put them!

The meat issue is a difficult one and I will compromise here and buy free range as well as organic. I have a fantastic local butcher, again within walking distance, and all his produce is free range etc and top quality. He also sells wild rabbit, pigs trotters etc - really great stuff and I want to continue to support him. I do aim to buy organic chicken though, even at £10 for a medium sized chicken. _pale_ I will continue to get every scrap of meat of it, make stock with the carcass and I currently also scrape off the fat from the stock to use for frying.

I am going to keep a weekly total of money spent on food and I am going to start from a Friday to Thursday and if it is of interest to anyone, post it on here.

Thanks again for all your support.

The link to the new york times recipe for no knead bread http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html
If you google "ny times no knead bread" you will find loads of discussions and links to slight variations on the theme. Don't be put off trying this recipe if at first the instructions look a bit daunting, just take it step by step and it will work.
