Getting overpaid tax back?

hmrc made a mistake and sent my hubby a self assessment form when we had already sent in partnership forms, this was over xmas and, having never seen one before I just filled it in with the same info as the partnership form and sent it back instead of querying it.
Then on 27th January, a tax calculation came saying he owed £153 in tax ( his partnership share is 10%) - we rang and explained it had been a mistake and the woman said just pay up as it's so close to the 31st and then send in a letter. etc. etc. which we did and he's since had a zero tax calculation back - BUT , more importantly, NO refund of the overpayment. It's not showing on his online tax account that it was ever paid in the 1st place, so how do we reclaim it?
The business account is nearly empty as our website sales are non existent atm, why on earth didn't they refund the payment back to the debit card it was made on or even send a cheque with the tax calc. letter?

Sounds as though you may have paid against a different Ref (UTR)? Was the 2nd Return the same ref as the partnership ..... and which one did you pay the £153 against? Either way ... sounds like a 'phone call to track it.
(They won't ever repay to a Debit Card as they don't handle the processing .. A&L do via Billpay)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Your husband should have 2 UTR's.
1 for his personal tax return on which he declares all his personal income including his share of his partnership profits and the 2nd for the partnership which have details of all the partners on it. You need to find out which UTR the £153 has been credited to and if necessary get it transferred to the correct account and subsequently refunded to him.
Also refunds are not paid unless you indicate on the tax return that you want it repaid either by giving bank account details or ticking box 9 on page TR5 of the tax return. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
