UHT milk

As UHT milk works out cheaper than fresh milk i'd like to convert over to it.. but i find it tastes a little funny (bizarrely used to drink it all the time as a kid but got used to fresh again!) Does anyone know how to make it taste a little better? I vaguely remember someone once suggesting i mix a little powdered milk in with it to make it "tastier" but i dont know.

Hi johanne,
Try UHT semi skimmed it tastes much nicer than the ordinary UHT. I don't use it it much but always have some in the house for those early mornings when we open the fridge and there isn't enough milk for breakfast.

Myeslf and the GF live off UHT skimmed milk (Tesco or asda value version).
Never used to like it but can't even notice the difference now. Have it in tea / coffee, cereal, other cooking, drink on its own.
As the OP said, its cheaper, easier to store, no mess when getting it home from supermarket, keeps for ages, never goes off - don't know how I ever lived without it.
The only shame about it is that the "brikpak's" that they come in (or whatever they are called) cannot be recycled as far as I know so have to go in the bin!!! Such a waste!!!

I drink it all the time, Johanne....fresh tastes very weak now...but also use powdered milk in tea...one spoonful per mug, and UHT keeps, unopened ,without a fridge.0

I'm not so sure it is cheaper.Tesco value skimmed UHT milk is cheaper, but the semi-skimmed and whole UHT is actually more expensive according to my calculations(which might be wrong).I make it 27p a pint for fresh milk and 28.5p a pint for UHT.HTH0

We have mostly UHT milk - but I can't stand the taste of either full fat or even semi skimmed. I think its something to do with the fat in the milk - cos it has a slightly "burnt" taste. So I buy the value skimmed UHT and it tastes fine - and it's cheapest - the best of both worlds!
In fact I even once did a mathematical comparison (inspired by Amy Da-whatshername of Tightwad Gazette fame) or the per litre price of UHT skimmed and value powdered milk - the UHT was fractionally cheaper. Ok, so I know that's a sad thing to do, but it keeps the brain alive!!!!!
The other milk we have is 3 pints per week of "proper" milk from the milkman for DHs breakfast cereal. That's not the cheapest way of buying it, but we figure that it's only £1.44 a week & it helps keep the milk delivery service alive in the area - very important for elderly folk who can't get out, also the free range eggs from the milkman are local & cheaper than tescos!0 -
It is like when you start taking tea without sugar, terrible at first but once you are used to it you will not go back. You can educate you'r pallet.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Chipps, how much are the free range eggs from your milkman out of interest?0

Hi ti1980
They are 90p for 6 - but they are very large ones!0 -
I concur that skimmed UHT milk tastes fine and I'm really picky ! I sometimes have fresh semi skimmed as treat because I want the extra creaminess for a recipe.
My 10 yr old son prefers bottled delivery semi skimmed milk, so I dilute it with Tesco value and skimmed milk and he hasn't noticed. Ditto I make his porridge and hot choc with 'my' carton of milk.;)
how about diluting your preferred fresh milk with UHT as you gradually switch over?0 -
We use value UHT skimmed, I think it's similar to semi-skimmed fresh milk, rather than tasting like skimmed fresh milk IYSWIM.
