Tax rebate help

I started work in September and have been paying tax each month, by the end of march i'll have earnt roughly 11k and paid £1500 tax. I had no income before this as I was a student (except a few weeks job seekers allowance). The tax code is 603L so there should only have been about 5k taxed thus ive been over taxed.

How do I go about getting a rebate and when should I do this?

Thanks

It appears you may be on an emergency tax code. Is there a letter X after your tax code?

If so, you need to contact your tax office ASAP and advise them that this is your only income since 6 April and could they issue a cummulative tax code. Also, because it is so close to the end of the tax year, you could ask them to fax a tax code to your employer to see if they can use it by the next time you get paid.

If you don't get your tax back before the end of the tax year, unfortunately you will have to wait for your P60, usually given to you in May, and then send it in to your tax office.

No its not an emergency tax code its the proper one (603L NONCU) for my job its just im paying the regular monthly rate of tax based on 12 months and only working 6. I gave them my p45 and my colleague who started the same time is on the same rate (but was working part time before she started). Its strange that another colleague who trained and started with us was put on a cumulative tax code though so hers is right.

NON CU, probably means non cummulative and this IS an emergency tax code. An emergency tax code means they give you personal allowances but on a monthly basis because they don't know what your previous income was to take into account any previous months.

If you hadn't worked at all in this tax year before starting with this employer, the P45 you gave them would be out of date, so that is why they have used a non cummulative code.

I would still advise you to contact your tax office as above. Don't worry that your colleague has been dealt with differently, everybody's circumstances are different.

The P45 was only a week old sent to me from the job centre so that's not the issue. I always thought BR was the emergency tax code.

Oh well, can't ring them till my next day off which is next week so it'll have to wait

Sorry, you originally said you had 'no income' before you started employment.

Not quite so straight forward now. If you received jobseekers allowance, this is taxable income and needs to included when your tax code is issued.

No BR is a Basic Rate tax code that is used if say you have two jobs and already use all your allowances at the first, then a basic rate code is used at your second job.

I would suggest waiting until April/May time when you get your P60 through. I called up the tax office around march time last year for a rebate request i sent in february and they told me it was too late in the tax year. I was in the exact same situation as you are now (all the way down to the couple of weeks unemployment pay)

Send a covering letter, a photocopy of your P60 and P45 to HMRC and they will respond by sending you a cheque (which i would guess is roughly around £700 considering your circumstances)

Thanks, ive figured the same amount too and thought that might be the thing to do. Is it the local tax office I write to?

Yes it is. The number for my local tax office (which is in wales even though i work in london) is 0845 300 3949. If you call that number and confirm your details they will give you the number for your tax office.

Call that and ask for their address and double check what information they need.

No. It's the one that d/w your employer. Should be on your P60 when received ... or ask your payroll / HR people for the employer reference and the related HMRC office + address.

On no account wait until after the end of the tax year as you will be in a queue with thousands of other people also waiting for a refund, also, this money is yours now.
I think the first port of call is your payroll department. Ask them why they have not used the figures on your P45 - was there some problem with it? If they can't sort it, then ring the tax office and see if they can issue a correct code before your MArch payday.
