disregard digital zoom, its marketing and only reaslly used when the optical is not up to scratch.
4MP is minimum, 5/6 is better, more then 8 is silly...!
Zoom X4 + is what you want to aim for.
there is a difference in lenses, and loads of other bits, but IMHO, the most important is the batteries as mentioned. if a camera takes AA, and the batteries run out, almost everywhere on earth wil have AA.
oh, and finally, try and get a camera with SD expandable memory. its turning into industry standard, and is reasonabley cheap coompared to other versions..0
