I dont know whether to go with a dmp or do it on my own

I sat for 2hrs once i got home from work yesterday ringing every debt company i had a letter for, looking through the experian report and ringing companies if the debt collectors had passed it back to them.

i have 6 companies i def have the debt information for these,
figures are £175.91 (value catalogue),£305 (catalogue) and £550 (bank)
i then have 4 further debts in higher figures. £1,350 (anglian water), £2,500 (old credit card), £7,050.06 (old hp agreement)

I also have 2 ccj's which at the moment do not have arrangements made, do i ring the county court where it went to to arrange this?

I have £100 per month to put towards these debts. i have an appointment booked in with payplan on thurs at 3pm but wondering if its something i could do on my own?

if i were to divide the £100 by all 8 debts that would be £12.50 each do you think they would take this. obv the £12.50 would rise everytime a debt is paid off. the other alternative is to use the first couple of money just paynig the smallest one to release some extra money but unfortunately that would mean nothing will get sorted with the others until then

Louisa, there are a few things to tackle here.

For the old debts, how old are they?
If you have made no payment towards the debt or acknowledged the debt in writing then it may be statute barred.
I also have 2 ccj's which at the moment do not have arrangements made, do i ring the county court where it went to to arrange this?
Again, when were these awarded? If 6 years ago then they would need to reapply to the court for permission to enforce the debt. If not then the CCJ would have stated the amount you were meant to pay these creditors. If you cannot afford this then you may need to apply to the court for a redetermination so you can pay a more managable amount. These are your priority debts right now.
I have an appointment booked in with payplan on thurs at 3pm but wondering if its something i could do on my own?
To start with, it would be best if you were fully aware of all your income, expenditure and debts. The SOA calculator is good for letting you see your financial position and would probably help to take along to your appointment. Try not to guess on the expenditure, but put what you actually spend in - not what you think you should be spending.

if i were to divide the £100 by all 8 debts ...
If you are going to make payments towards your debts, you need to treat everyone equally. This may mean that you pay 1% of the amount owed to each creditor and paying the full amount stated by the court judgement for both CCJ's.

I don't know if you have enough funds available for Payplan to assist directly in setting up a DMP, but they wll be able to offer advice as to what you could do.

If you have any penalty charges that you could reclaim, i'd also look into that.

perhaps some others that have done this on thier own can advise but I went with payplan and found them brilliant.

I was so stressed at the time and calling all the creditors myself would have probably tipped me over the edge. I found that just leaving payplan to it was the best thing for me at the time.

They do everything and all you have to do is give them a monthly payment and watch it all go down.

In Jan 2007 I had a debt of £27,896.00
In October 2011 I paid it off and owned £0.00 - Kinda proud of this!:T

Sorry for just butting in on your thread but I just wanted to ask about CCCS and payplan. I've been in touch with CCCS and filled out a debt remedy form, however I haven't actually spoken to anyone yet. What I wanted to know is, do places like CCCS and payplan take over all your debt or can you ask them just to deal with a select few?
Do what you want because in the end people will judge you anyway.

well they work out a budget for you so the money you want to put aside for creditors not on the plan you will have to put down as something else like travel or food etc.

Why don't you want to include all creditors?
  • I would advise to let them take over all debt, otherwise you dealing with a selection yourself may end up in a state and will then need adding anyway. Your aim on a DMP is to be debt free one day and that wont happen if you leave 1 or 2 out of it.

Does anyone know what the minimum amount per month is for being accepted by cccs and payplan. Is it £150? or does it depend on the debt amount?
  • My car's on HP and I'm scared it's taken away from me if I declare it so I wasn't going to include it. Am I just being paranoid and silly?

You need to include all your unsecured debts on a dmp otherwise it could be seen that you are not treating creditors fairly and it's likely to open a can of worms.

It's worth chatting with them anyway to see what they advise. I'm on a dmp with them and have been for a year. However, I am thinking of going it alone soon now that they have done the initial work but it's also nice to have their support!
