Divorce and finance!

I am a 59 year old woman in the process of trying to negotiate a financial settlement in divorce proceedings. Married 8 years, co-habited 6, therefore termed long marriage. Husband of 44 who came into my home, which I had paid for outright, with nothing, has paid no mortgage or bills, but theoretically entitled to 50%. I inherited from my father in 1997, and have always kept this money separate. Will this be treated as part of the pot? Husband has offered to let me have 2/3 of matrimonial home, which will not be sufficient to re-house myself and live on. Have had some legal advice, but am trying to keep costs to a minimum. He has not offered any maintenance, but I have been told that I should be entitled to some.

If your husband has a pension pot perhaps you could give up any claim on it in exchange for the full value of your house so that you can stay in it. You must find a lawyer who specialises in matrimonial disputes even if you don't want to pay legal fees. You need good advice.

About the inheritance - I found quite an interesting article here
    http://www.ambrose.appelbe.co.uk/DivorceInheritance.htm

From reading that, it doesn't seem entirely clear what the situation is, but I think it is certainly worth arguing strongly that the inheritance is separate from your matrimonial finances and that he doesn't have a claim on it.

I would hire a solicitor. Advise on a forum, whilst well meaning, isn't generally legally binding.

You should get the first session and get some preliminary advice for a minimal fee :)
