dealing with someone's Estate brings out the worst in most UK institutions .... you will find!

I have had exactly the opposite experience.
Everyone I had to deal with was most helpful.

So what you had in effect then was a personal reps account which was converted to Executors when you gave them a copy of the grant of probate?
Not sure whether you call it something different to LTSB, but all their documentation had 'Executor of Mrs ....' on it from the start. Does that help?

You seem to think there's some reason why they wouldn't have opened an Executor's Account. Isn't that up to each bank? I know they each have their own limits above which they require probate to release funds - with LTSB it's £15,000 - I assume they make their own rules with accounts too. Barclays certainly seem to, judging by the OP.

Yes you can ONLY open an Executors account legally if you have Probate. Might be a case here of bank staff not knowing what they are doing?

I suggest walking into the bank and saying in a very loud voice in front of all the customers "I want to see the manager. I have a very serious complaint about your customer service and I need to get it resolved now." It's difficult to be noisily assertive like this but if you've got a serious issue which needs resolving I find it's often not worth bothering with the monkey and insisting on dealing with the organ grinder. Businesses don't like their inefficiencies shown up in public, especially in front of other customers, and often this will be enough to get some common sense to bear.
Usually it's just a matter of young inexperienced assistants not knowing when to exercise discretion.
