I would only do pure cotton pure whites at that temp (well I wouldn't do anything at 90 but if I was....)as I wouldn't want to take a change on colours running. i wash everything on cold now except is dd has wet the bed than 60...

  • I have just boiled (in a stockpot on the hob) a vintage hand embroidered linen tablecloth and it has come out sparkling. It had a few 'vintage stains' and a new coffee stain so I soaked it in soda crystals and then brought it up to a boil. This is what they did before washing machines.

If you want to test a boil wash why not try a couple of expendable items in a saucepan on the hob.
  • I have heard before that people use denture tablets for their whites and it brings them up great!

I've never done a 95d wash in my life!!! LOL

in my machine manual it does reccommend doing a 'service' wash evey few months. no clothes in it, but normal amount of washing powder/detergent etc. it helps get rid of bacteria that builds up and the other temperature settings wont kill. i also clean my washer out every week. take the detergent tray out and scrub that, it makes a really difference with the smell of the machine.
I may try washing my bedding and socks, i found a few things like my daughters p.e tops, which are 100% cotton, but ive only found a few things so far, so cant see the point of putting 8 things in on a 95d wash. i may end up going through all of the socks and cotton undies and whacking them all in to see what happens, then if they shrink, its not expensive to replace. will c what happens and let u know if anyone is interested. thanks to all who commented...

I do a 95 degree wash now and again with my white pure cotton sheets! (the expensive ones my mum gave me) keeps them beautiful and white!
I wouldnt recommend 95 for anything which has elastic in though! such as socks or knickers! it ruins the elastic and you dont want that!
tbh I find 40 degrees with a bit of oxy or napisan or biotex (when i can find it) is great for whites. any item which has gone a bit dingy I usually just soak overnight or add a little drop of bleach to - cotton only for this!

forgot to say that I use biological powder - I find that the best for removing stains or keeping whites white! not to mention that it makes a great stove top cleaner when you mix it to a paste with a little hot water.

I put my towels through on a 'boil' wash every so often, only light coloured ones, my others are navy so I think they would fade too much, although that said they get washed at 60 all the time.

If you do a 90/95 degree wash I'd ensure all the colours are similar and they are made of cotton, things like working jeans (i.e. no fancy studding or jewel effect stuff) are perfect or white / pale shirts.

If I get a stain on anything I put a bit of washing up liquid directly onto it before a normal wash.

Oh! I used to LOVE that smell, I'd forgotten all about boiling washing in a pan on the stove until it was mentioned in this thread..........we didn't have a special pan though !! :o:o

I remember my mum boiling something nasty smelling on the hob. Can't say for sure it was socks, but some kind of clothing anyway.

I think it might have been my brother's nappies, as we didn't have a washing mc at that time. Oh the thought of doing that now...

    It's only a game

perhaps you have to be a certain age to remember this...............but snotty hankies were boiled up in pans on the stove! they had a VERY MEMORABLE fragrance to them, along with nappies and socks! the hankies always had to be ironed out flat first then folded in half and ironed then half again and ironed over then large gents hankies got folded again into a rectangle and ironed while ladies hankies were folded into a triangle and ironed.........and this was our first lesson in ironing in school! er - mum had taught me that years before! I was already onto shirts by that lesson in school - and dont know about anyone elses mum, but mine was obsessive about dads shirts being ironed correctly!
