in Cutting tax
Hi
I am no master when it comes to understanding Income tax so i was wondering if some wizz could help me out.
I work for the NHS and have gone over the £40,000 income mark on month 11 of the financial year 08-09, so will get taxed 40% as a pose to 22%. My question is that when does this 40% tax kick in. Do i pay that for the remainder of the year (i.e another month) since it is the end of the tax year. Or do i start paying that in April when the new financial year starts.
I have a claim for overtime in the region of £800, my problem is that obviously i rather get that taxed at the rate of 22% and not 40%, so do i put my claim in this month (i.e the last month of theis financial year) or should i leave it till next month?
Any help would be appreciated.

the tax system works like this
pension payments are tax free so you need to work out your taxable pay (which is gross less pension payments)
then the first 6035 is tax free
the next 34,800 is taxed at 20%
then anything above that is taxed at 40%
next tax year the tax free allowance is 6475
then the next 37,400 is taxed at 20%
then 40%
since you haven't said how much your taxable pay is (i.e. after pension payments ) its not possible to say.0
