Change of name

When married, i need to tell the bank about my new name, do they need to be sent an original marriage cert or will a photocopy do??

Also, i have a provisional driving licence, do i need to change it? Or is it ok to pass my test and apply for my full licence in my married name then?

:D

the bank will need to have the original but from I remember on my first time getting married you can go into the bank and they will photocopy it to send it off to HQ so you can have your original back straight away.

Not sure about the provisional licence.

As long as you are not using two names to commit fraud there is no problem with you using your married name for some things and not for others. However, no new credit cards in your maiden name!

banks can be particularly annoying, especially those online. Although my bank were happy to photocopy the licence for their purposes, they refused to do so for their online section saying that they didn't know me???????
we were given advice that getting a second certificate at the time you get the first saves time and hassle and the worry that things get lost in the post as you often have to send the original.

I don't know how much it costs if you get married in a church but our extra certificate was £3. Check the website of the local authority for fees or give the registrar a ring.

There was a section of the form you fill in with your wedding details and vow selections to request extra certificates and we got both on the day.

We've just picked up 5 extra marriage certificates (seems everyone needs to see a certified copy) after getting married last month and it cost £3.50 each. (London Borough of Bexley)

The GRO website says £7 for a copy

I changed my name with two banks. One just asked me to fill in a form and didn't ask for any proof at all! The other one asked for my original marriage certificate, so I took it in to a local branch and they photocopied it.

We got two certificates but we lost one on the day! It turned up almost a year later in my father-in-law's jacket pocket (he found it when he got his suit out to wear for another wedding)! My husband lost his degree certificate on the day of his graduation, so it is something we seem to have a habit of doing...!
  • :o Hi,

I got married last August and have changed my name on some things bank etc. But not my driving licence/log book/tax disc!!

I know you can be fined for not informing the dvla but my tax disc needs renewing by the end of this month will they notice if i use a cc with my married name? eek! (I know I need to get organised but there's always something better to do).

    :o
