Help with mouldy bathroom please

Options
The grouting on the bathroom tiles and also the mastic around the bath has all gone mouldy this winter, and despite my best efforts, I cannot shift it.

The mastic has turned black and the grout has turned a very fetching orange colour!

Does anyone have any helpful advice about removing it?

Many thanks,

Tracy

  • Toothbrush dipped in bleach will do most of it but you might need to replace the mastic

I use this and find it is brilliant.
I too suffer with mold in my bathroom and have to clean my ceiling once a month. The grout is the same we suffer from orange mold too.
Just make sure you don't get it on any carpet or clothing as it will bleach them.
    Good luck

Me too. The Dettol one won't shift it, neither will the Astonish version. I have lost count of the number of times I've had to replace the silicone sealant on the bath due to it getting mouldy...

I'm currently wiping it down daily, bleaching every week, and airing the bathroom daily but still getting some mould growth - it can't just be me can it?!

I use a shower spray after EVERY shower. I also leave the bathroom window open as much as possible - so it's open it I'm at work. I also make sure I dry the window frame daily (this is where I get the most mould), so it may be worth keeping an old towel for wiping down the tiles after every shower.

And I've also been using a dehumidifier in the house, which has helped hugely.

The important thing is to kill the mould. I have a feeling that borax is good for this, but will check my notes later.

I think with the silicone seal you need to remove it. The mold grows into the silicone so as far as i know there is nothing that will remove the mold out of the silicone. I too have to put new silicone around my bath and sink about twice a year. The dettol mould and mildew removers good on ceilings and grout. My bathroom gets mouldy a lot even though we try to ventalate it and keep it warm. No easy solution as far as i know.

  • I had great success with mould remover from Lakeland, see here You need to open windows etc when you use it, but it did work, even on the silicone. And I have the windows open and dry off the tiles and bath seal, but it still got mouldy.

I second the HG stuff (you can also get it from Homebase). We moved into a place with a really mouldy shower and nothing shifted it, but the HG stuff worked wonders on the grouting and on the sillicone sealant. Be careful as it's REALLY strong stuff, but it's brilliant.

The Dettol stuff is good but it's much more domestic strength. Good for windows though.

Just to point out it does say only leave for 3-5 mins (yes, I did leave it for like 30 mins, but I wanted to make sure no one put their bathrooms in danger lol!)
