  • I took 3 back to Sainsbury's this morning & was refunded back £2.92 for one bottle & £3.86 each for the other 2 ( different flavour to the first one) - I didn't have a receipt but had no problems getting the refund.

If people are returning stuff to shops they didn't buy them from...aren't they really giving the shops free money? The store never would have paid for that particular bottle of mouthwash but will receive the refund from the manufacturer.

I suppose you could look at it in the sense that the are using the staff, tills, boxes etc to fund the recall until such time the money comes from the manufacturer. (Although I assume they give some kind of cash incentive to the retailer?)
They aren't going to profit from the exersize as the money has already been given back to the customer.

The shop in this instance is acting as a conduit to refund money from the manufacturer to the customer. No doubt they will make an admin charge profit somewhere etc.
