Statements for bank charges

I have been out of serious debt for about a year now but there were a few years that I was getting huge amounts of bank charges (usually more than I was spending). I didn’t realise that this was a shady practice by the bank. I would like to reclaim some of this and was wondering how I would go about getting the old account records from them (I threw them away at the time because I was ashamed). Do I just send a letter to the bank requesting all my account record from this date to that date? Do they have to provide me with them?
Thanks for all your help!

Hello,
Yes you are able to request copies of all statements from the last 6 years from your bank.
Write a letter to your Bank requesting copies under a Data Subject Access Request (DSAR). Make this clear in your letter that you are making a DSAR as there are specific timescales they have to follow for these - they have a maximum of 40 days to provide the info to you from receipt of your written request and the fee (they can charge you a maxiumum of £10).
It is likely that they will write back to you saying that the statements are not covered by the DSAR and that they do not have to supply them but please persist with this as the Information Commissioner has confirmed that statements are covered by DSARs during the case of Durant v FSA.
I have recently contacted MBNA to request copy statements and at first they refused. We persisted and threatened to report them to the Information Commissioner and they eventually agreed. They sent us screen printouts though instead of statements but that was OK as we only needed to add up the charges.
This website is good for info and also template letters http://idigital.vm.bytemark.co.uk/bag/forum/
Good luck! Let us know how you get on - it may be best to add your update to the "Bank Charges - Are They Illegal?" post under the Budgeting and Current Account board.:heart2: Tabs :heart2:
