DLA - Understated level of Care

I have been in receipt of the higher rate component of Mobility for about 5 months, since submitting the claim forms in October 2008.
I recall being over the moon to learn that I had been successful in receiving the Mobility rate at the time.
The letter I received from the DM said that I did not qualify for the Care component as I had actually written on the claim form that I received less help night and day with toilet needs and dressing that.
I think I understated my needs, probably out of pride and embarrassment.
I know it is too late to appeal, but thinking about it now, the extra money would be of great use now that I am benefit dependent.
DLA does say to contact them if your conditions change. Although mines have never really changed. Can I contact them to say that I had understated on the claim form and that I really could do with the Care component as I need it.
The toilet and dressing needs issues have been documented with my GP anyway and DLA would have had this info when they processed the claim originally, so would they need to contact my GP again?
