Working in America over summer?

Hey guys sorry if this is the wrong section, feel free to move it if it is.

I want to work in the United States over the summer, with preferably paid work but I would probably consider volounterr work as I want to experience America.

I know about the "Camp America" but I don't want to do that really and it's getting late now. I've seen loads of websites where you have to pay fees of like £300 and then they apparently find you work etc.

Just wondering if anyone knows of any reputable sites for temporary/student jobs in the summer in America?

I just want to go to a nice different country and work :)

Many thanks in advance, you guys on moneysavingexpert helped me alot.

  • You say you don't want to do Camp America - is that because you don't want to be on a camp or is it the working with children side?

If it's working directly with children then Camp America do a work scheme in camps for kitchen work/handyman work/admin work as well as the usual counsellor work.

I did Camp America last summer as a counsellor and it was amazing!!

When I was travelling I met a few people who had gone to USA with a company for summer work, but it was mainly work in Theme parks/restaurants etc. I cannot remember the company name now but I'll post back when I do

Well i've heard it's amazing and the experience is great etc

It's just you have to pay around £350/£400 altogether, and I simply can not afford it at the moment. I know you can earn up to $1500 UiSD and I will probably make my money back, it's just that i cant afford to pay it up front sort of thing?
(and no, i have nothing against working with children)

    Themeparks/restuarants sounds good to me.
If you could post the links when you remember that would be great.
    Thanks alot

I just want to work doing ANYTHING really in the USA where you don't have to pay alot of money upfront.
  • Either way you're gonna have to pay money upfront I suspect. The American Embassy will be looking for you to be "sponsored" by a company (which is what most of the companies like Camp america and BUNAC do). Getting direct sponsorship from a company is difficult, and I'm not entirely sure you can just rely on that any more anyhow (could be wrong?). Plus there's a lot of paperwork, etc, and you have to think about tax.

You're much better off going through a company and paying. If you can't manage it this year, save up for next year. If you want to do camp, but are worried about the fees, CCUSA is the cheapest company for camp counsellor positions.

    HIya,
in order to work in USA over the summer legally you need to apply for the J1 programme which is for students only.
Take a look at www.j1online.ie although for irish it applies to uk residents as well and you can apply thru them.

Whichever option you decide on you will have to pay upfront for it. As others have said the only way to get a job there is to be sponsered by a company which, unless you have links with the company eg through an employer, you are going to have to pay for.

Camp America costs around £400 (last year's price)- but this includes your return flight, visa and medical insurance. All costs you will have to pay any way upfront if you managed to somehow organise it yourself. A return flight is going to be min £250. Visa is around £80. Travel insurance for a long period which allows working £??! So camp america (and the other similar companies) all offer extreme value for money.

If you can't afford the £400 now then you should perhaps think of doing it next summer so you can afford it. Because you'll need money to take with you to for food/rent/travels especially if you are just working not doing a camp or similar programme.

I'm just thinking theres huge potential to be scammed here.

Visa requirements for the USA are very tricky.

surely there are lots of American teenagers looking for similar jobs so why let in lots of "foreigners" ?

because it works out cheaper to employ a international than an american - from my experience at summer camp! My camp had 75% international staff and 25% american, the majority of the american staff were employed all year round too. International workers at a camp don't normally have to register for social security etc.

but I would never have gone through a non-recognised agency as you can get scammed.

OP - why don't you ask your uni careers dept as they should have lots of info on working abroad.
