assets of elderly in care

I have an elderly relative living alone who may have to go into local authority care in the future, If he does the local authority will strip him of all assets above a certain figure, i would like to know what this figure is, and as people who dont have any assets receive the same care he would like to know how much of his money he can give away and to how many people and the authority not to be able to reclaim his money.
