Nope . I dont give to charities. I have paid enough tax in my lifetime to finance a small African nation for decades.

I did, however, donate 10 computers, about 300 books and heaps of sporting equipment (footballs, sporting clothes etc etc) to the school in a Thailand village where my wife grew up. I also paid the salary of a teacher for the school for one year. Education system over there is very different and appallingly funded. I could have just made a donation, but - frankly - such is the corruption that it would have ended up in the headteacher's bank account. I kid you not.

It was rather a nice experience, actually. The school put on a party attended by everyone in the village with food and speeches etc.

Well done a very nice and generous gesture
  • yes... I do a direct debit to plan for a little boy in indonesia, and I am running a charity quiz at work next week - we do two a year and raise about 200quid for charity from raffle and entry - easier to get people to give if they get a fun night out!

Yes I give by direct debit so that the charities can claim back the tax.

Scope, NSPCC, Concern Worldwide, MacMillan, Plan International & Help the Aged.

I won't ever give a penny to the "chuggers" though. They are parasites.

I support the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa (because I have been there and I support the work they do) and Maternity Worldwide (another charity that works for safe births mostly in Ethiopia). A friend of mine works with a charity in Uganda and I would donate and support them, she is out there living and working at the moment. Another group I support is RUSH in Kenya, as again the money goes straight to the places of need. If you actually get involved you can see where the money goes; but I also supported Live Aid and Comic Relief and Amnesty because it's big public campaigns that raise real awareness and have more political sway. Let's not forget that if it wasn't for the white ribbon and Live Aid etc then a lot of people would not have been part of lobbying for Governments to support changing the way aid is given, because huge public opinion was that we needed to do something- and you just don't ignore that (rightly or wrongly and in this case I believe rightly, even though most of those involved never had to physically DO much themselves- the fact they came out in support was enough).

Charity bosses set a poor example by taking large salaries and extravagant expenses. I just don't see how can they justify this when so many charity workers contribute their time for nothing or minimum wages.
Our CEO doesn't get a whopping salary- can't remember how much, but was surprised how little it is given the budget and headcount that is managed.
