  • It also seems very hypocritical of MPs to be criticising other people's pensions as being excessive. Imagine someone having a deeper trough than them?

I must say I was shocked to see the headlines - "disgraced banker". Er what? He made a mistake buying ABN Amro, a bad call maybe with hindsight - but wow tiems have changed if we leap on people for bad calls. Of course I'm jealous of his pension - who wouldn't be - but to publicly hound the guy like this is absolute gutter press and gutter politics.

Not the first time someone's been picked on though. Anyone remember David Kelly?

Goodwin is being used as a diversion, but to claim that the head of RBS is just a scapegoat is ludicrous.

Perhaps scapegoat was the wrong word, what I meant is a smokescreen at this time, Clown will jump on any bandwagon to divert attention from himself, he knows he's finished, it's just a matter of when, I think he would like to hold on until he loses the election whenever that may be.

Smokescreen is correct. I am annoyed that someone like Goodwin will be £16m richer, but when we've pumped hundreds of billions into banks and the economy is going through a (ahem) rough patch, they should write it off and get on with other stuff which is a much higher priority!

The one thing I think it shows though is how little the Government has eyeballed the Banks' contracts, balance sheets, etc. We've decided to take on full liability for debts and yet we have no idea how they operate (from my pov), it seems to me like a total swing in the dark. The Government should be taking a much firmer hand with the banks and not leaving it "to trust" that things are going to be managed correctly.

I am still confused why people think this leak is good for the Government? Most of the stuff around at the moment - doesn;t matter what it is - makes the Government look b*****y incompetent.

    I'm not so sure.

One of the women at work stated today Goodwin is a disgrace, and if it wasn't for Brown cracking down on banks, I bet he would have been trying to take more.

Just shows exactly how this is being manipulated for her to think that, she has said before she thinks Brown is a fool, but she isn't on forums etc, she just watches the BBC news, thats it....and thats her summary of the situation.

That summary, I would think, extends to a majority of the population.
  • Alastair Darling became chancellor of the exchequer in mid 07. Most of the damage done to the economy was well before then methinks.
Who is to be next...the electorate for voting in the Labour party?

More to the point, he committed the offence in Singapore, they take a harder line on people who threaten to bankrupt a state with few natural resources (Sounds familiar? London needs to keep an eye on cities starting with a capital "S" )
For those with longer memories ask about Mr Slater & Mr Walker, I seem to remember that outfit had to be a bit careful about finding itself changing planes in Singapore.
If I remember correctly, Leeson came from a housing estate in Watford, more Mick Jagger type background than old pals network.
