First sewing machine

I thought I'd ask here because there's so many of you wonderful crafty people on this forum :D that hopefully you'll be able to give me some advice.

I've never owned a sewing machine nor do I have any proper experience using one, but if I wanted to start, what would be a decent, cheap sewing machine to get to start off with?

Any advice much appreciated! :D

Fruitloops, I used to sew quite a lot many moons ago but havn't done so for years so am not up to speed on which make/model etc.

However, I think the first thing is- what do you want to use it for? Dressmaking, Sewing curtains, crafts etc? For example, do you need an all singing dancing embroidery machine, or just run of the mill?

I think your best bet would be to find a sewing machine shop and have a look and get their advice. You can very often try them out in the shop.
  • Thanks moonpenny :D

I'm not entirely sure what I'd end up using it for really, perhaps I should do more research, I'd just love to get into crafting and perhaps some dressmaking :)

I will do what you advise tho and check out some stores :D

Hi again, They had some basic machines in TJ Hughes a while ago that would probably suit as a first machine. Can't remember how much, probably about £50. Most basic ones now come with different stitches, zig-zag etc that would be fine for craft work or dressmaking. Or----second hand would be a good idea.
As you get into it (or not! LOL) you could then trade up.
  • Hi, I've recently bought my first sewing machine. I plumped for a Brother LS-2125, it is sold in Argos however I bought mine from ebay as it was cheaper and came with free threads. I got it due to the reviews it had on the internet and I have found it pretty straight-forward to use. I have only ever used a sewing machine in school which was over 10 years ago.

I threaded the machine by using a tutorial on youtube and then practised some basic sewing on scraps of fabric from old clothes and have made two sock monkeys using the machine :)

I'll have a hunt around and see what I can find for a fairly cheap price... I can't wait to get started making stuff! :D
