Criminal Record Check Question for Job

Hi all,

I have been offered a job interview at my local airport and i have just found out that i must pay them £20 for them to do a criminal record check for this postion. Here is what the text has stated.
  • A criminal record check will need to be completed if you are successful. This will be filled in on your interview. We will require credit card/cheque book/ switch details so we can apply for this on your behalf. This will cost £20.00 and must be funded by you.
How the hell can people fund this when being out of work and on Job Seekers. Is this normal for a company to do this and is this allowed. Sounds like you have to pay a company to get a job now days. LOL

I have no problem with them doing such check but i dont have the money to pay for that

Thanks
Chris Branston

Well you only have to pay the £20 if you are successful!

Are you really suggesting that £20 is out of your limites if you are offered a job?

My building charges every person £5 for a car park pass and £5 for a security card to enter the building, its quite normal.

I think I have heard it all now, £20 not to take a job. Isnt this what your JSA can be used for?

  • i think it's poor form. every job ive had has required a crb check, yet i've never been asked to pay. They sound like tightwads to me.
    "What...? I was only saying...."
  • They will only do the check if they want to give you the job.

So long as your drug traffiking & Vat Carousel Fraud dont show up you will be fine....

But seriously, you might want to ask if you get the money back in your first wage & if you have to pay for one every couple of years etc..
    Not Again
  • Many thanks for the Info. Other jobs i have gone for pay for this. I would use my JSA but that go's on my budget each month and my CCCS(DMP) no spare cash left at all. I would pay if i had the cash. Problem is i get offered the job and they take the money out but i have no money in the bank.

The actual cost of this is usually around £37 so they are subsidising the cost ,not much comfort though.

No £20 is for the basic check and they wouldn't need the enhanced as it is not for regular and prolonged unsupervised contact with children or vulnerable adults. Its the same one that Pub Landlords now have to have.
Why don't you approach your Jobcentreplus advisor and explain the situation? They may be able to help. How long have you been on JSA, cos New Deal may be able to help. Failing that, contact your MP/ Local charities/ Princes trust etc to get it. I'm sure there will be an avenue for you. Hope you get the job!
  • Yep-if you are on New Deal you can get a voucher to give to the employer to fund the CRB. I have found that most agencies will ask you to pay for the check yourself, whereas most employers will pay for it for you.
  • I think i will contact the job centre on Monday and ask about this as i am not on new deal and been out of work from end of Nov last year.

I did ask the company about maybe taking the cost out my first wages if i was to get offerd the job and they said the following.

Unfortunately we cannot take it out of your wages as it is not us that takes the money it is Disclosure Scotland, also you need a Criminal Record Check to be able to start work.

If you are claiming job seekers allowance check with them as they sometimes pay for it.
