Hi, I've just booked the Westin St Francis in San Fran for a trip in July on netflights.com after searching for hours. Worth a look!0

Can thoroughly recommend it. Stayed there for 3 nights last year. Right on Union Square and central for everything.0

The Hotel Chancellor is nice but not flash, again on Union Square and has some nice touches. The hotel management team always goes out of its way to help: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g60713-d115644-Reviews-Chancellor_Hotel_on_Union_Square-San_Francisco_California.htmlValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

(By the way, I stayed in the Marriott Courtyard San Francisco Downtown, which was good and reasonably priced)0 -
SF is a big city, and it depends on what you mean by "good location". The hotels are very competitive and as long as you book wisely, you will broadly get what you pay for within any area.
There are lots of hotels in the Union Square area, good for business or conventions, but I don't like the neighbourhood. It's over-priced and I don't think it's great for restaurants or nightlife. I doubt that a woman walking alone in the area would feel happy, and it is all too easy to stray into the Tenderloin if you don't know your way. That said, I have visited friends staying in the Pickwick and it looks good. If your budget is really strapped, the Mosser Victorian (across Market Street) is a decent option. Mid-level hotels that I have stayed at and would recommend include the Warwick and the King George.
SOMA (South of Market) used to be an area to avoid, but that part around Yerba Buena Gardens has become trendy over the last ten years and is a better option than Union Square now. A couple of years back I stretched out and stayed at the Argent (I think it has changed its name since) which proved well worth the extra few dollars.
If I were in town for pleasure rather than business, other areas altogether would be more attractive, such as North Beach or (perhaps overly touristy) Fisherman's Wharf. There are quite a few motel-style places between Union Street (upmarket shopping and restaurant area, not to be confused with Union Square) and Fisherman's Wharf that look inexpensive and decent, although I've not stayed in any.
My own preference is to stay in the Van Ness district. It's a "nice" area and the hotels are a bit cheaper than Union Square. Thera are a few restaurants around, or it's feasible to walk north to Union Street. It's near the opera, and there are some reasonable and inexpensive restaurants on Polk Street. The Jack Tar / Cathedral Hill is good. There's a large Holiday Inn that's cheap and OK. But my favourite by far is the Queen Anne. It's a couple of blocks from the major thoroughfares and bus lines, an old Victorian building with really friendly staff. Other than that hotel, the adjacent blocks are a residential area, with free on-street overnight parking feasible. You feel like you are staying in the real San Francisco.
If you're willing to go farther afield, there are places from which it is possible to commute via BART. For instance, I've sometimes stayed at motels in Oakland at Jack London Square, so that I can go to Yoshi's (one of the world's top four jazz clubs) and commute into town. It's also possible to commute by boat across the Bay from JLS as long as you realise the last boat goes at about 6pm.
In other words, I'd urge you to think laterally.0 -

Travelzoo the USA version, have some great offers on Californian hotels. I just booked 3 nights at the Raddison for $84pn including breakfast and free parking. The same dates without using the Travelzoo "code" was $170pn.
