hi, my brother would like to become an apprentice in joinery. hes 23 and works in an unrelated industry. i think he'd be really good at it, but everybody keeps telling us that there are no places taking people on at the moment. Is this true?
We live in leicester, how do we find out about local vacancies. he currently works full time, so how would he be paid if he were an apprentice? i've not had much luck with google.
Any info would be great!

hi 5th,
We have been considering offering modern apprenticeships where I work - we always used to offer trade apprenticeships in the past but this is much broader.
Your brother might find the website interesting:
http://www.apprenticeships.org.uk/
It should hopefully give him enough info to get him started.

It's probably true that in a recession it's the training budget that's the first to be cut but I'd make an appointment with your local Nextstep adviser who should be able to discuss this with you. You might improve your chances, particularly if there's nothing much around at the moment, by taking a carpentry course at college this September. Things might pick up in 2010!0

Its true. The whole of construction is on a downturn (apart from Rail, Roads & infrastructure).
I would suggest he has a look at them or tries to contact some bespoke furniture manufacturers around Leicester. Not Again0
